Local assists those in need

On Saturday, Joe Modubu (36), who is currently an unemployed KwaThema resident, held a 'Fill the caddy' event, where he collected perishable foods for underprivileged children.

The initiative, which was held just off Coaton Road, Selection Park, was an event where local residents were urged to fill up Joe’s Volkswagen bakkie with tinned goods which went towards schools in need of assistance.

Joe parked his vehicle and arranged a day of music and dancing for those who wanted to contribute towards filling up the bakkie.

“I heard about some schools with children who only ate once a day and I realised I needed to do my part in assisting them,” says Joe.

The charity event started at noon and ended at 7pm which Joe felt was sufficient time to fill the vehicle with food.

Joe says, “I will be doing this sort of event at least once a year in order to help the schools in need. This was my first attempt and it started off well.”

A local business allowed Joe to use their property to host the event and Joe did some advertising to make locals aware of the day.

“The day was a complete success, I did not expect a big turnout but I was surprised by the large number of people who joined in and contributed towards the initiative,” says Joe.

A TV crew was also present to film the progress made by Joe and all those who contributed.

“A local tyre and mag company donated quite a large amount of perishables,” says Joe.

Joe is proud and happy that the day he hosted was such a success and he looks forward to the next one.
