Party with the Addie

The Addie's 100th birthday has sent us into a frenzy planning our yearlong celebration, with something on the cards for everyone.

While it may be our birthday, we’d love to have you join in on the fun so take a look at the list of projects we have planned for this year, choose your favourite and celebrate with us.

Trace our town’s history

We will be printing a birthday supplement in May, to mark the day the Addie was born, featuring some of the history of Springs.

If you have stories to tell us about your childhood in Springs or urban legends you heard growing up we would love to hear from you.

While the town has changed immeasurably over the past century, many of our residents remember Springs’ glory days and these are the positive stories we would like to hear about this once flourishing mining town.

Add to Bridget’s family

School children are invited to help Bridget, our mascot, find her family.

To do so you need to paper mache a piggy bank and give it a name before bringing it to our offices.

These will be entered into a competition to find her best looking relative.

Hand your art work to Izahn van Huyssteen.

Old photos of Springs

If you have old photos of Springs and her residents that you would like to share with our readers, send these with a short description of when and where the photo was taken and the names of the people in the photo if possible.

Submit these with your name and a contact number and we will return your photos to you as soon as we have published them in the Addie.

Photograph the beauty in Springs

Take a walk (or a drive if you feel safer) and snap some photos showing the things you love most about Springs today.

Again we would like to know when and where you took the photo and why this image makes you happy to live and work in Springs.

Springs’ top 100 recipes

We are looking for Springsites’ favourite recipes for publication in the paper from May 19.

We will be publishing 25 starters, 50 main courses including vegetarian dishes, and 25 desserts.

To stand a chance of winning great prizes – which will be announced later in the year – send in your favourite recipe.

Turning 100 with us

If you, or someone in your family is turning 100 this year please send us their name and contact number so we can get hold of them and feature them in the paper.

Alternatively send the contact number of a family member who can facilitate the meeting.

Having your baby on our birthday

We would also like to hear about babies born on our birthday May 16.

Let us know if you are due in the week of May 16 so we can contact you to find out if your baby shares our birthday.

Trading for over half a century

Many business in Springs have been trading for more than 50 years.

We would like to chat to business owners whose businesses have been in Springs for 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 or 100 years this year.

Submissions

Watch the Addie and our website for news about other projects or to make suggestions of what you would like to see covered in this year’s papers around our birthday theme.

All the projects will be featured in the Addie and on our website.

Items for all projects, unless otherwise stated, should be submitted to the editor, Samantha Keogh on samk@caxton.co.za or brought to our offices at 48 Fifth Avenue in the Springs CBD.

For more information on any of these projects contact Samantha on 011 812 4824.

Electronic photos must be a minimum of 1MB and should be submitted as a JPEG attachment in an email.
