Health hazard cleared

Ekurhuleni Metro contract workers finally unblocked the drain that led to the overflow of sewage into Petrel Street, Daggafontein last Thursday.

This comes after the story “Sewage spill health hazard” in which Nadine Neumann (29) reported the overflowing drain to the Addie and the metro.

She said the property was once again flooded with raw sewage, an ongoing problem since May 2014.

Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, says upon investigating the cause of the sewage blockage, the metro technicians discovered the sewer line was broken, therefore they couldn’t open the drain on the day it was reported.

“We then appointed a contractor to start with the replacement work of the broken sewer line which was completed on January 25 and the blockage was cleared on January 28,” he says.

The metro suspect the blockage and broken sewer line are due to illegal mining activities in the area.

They urge the community to report any mining activities to the municipal call centre on 086 054 3000.

Gadebe mentioned that the affected yard in Daggafontein will be disinfected once it has been completely cleaned.

Neumann confirms the contract workers arrived on Tuesday and started cleaning their yard.

“They arrived late in the afternoon to pick up all the raw sewage and returned early Wednesday morning to disinfect the area,” she says.

The metro used a white powder to disinfect the area and Neumann says her two children Jaydon (7) and Cameron (5) children cannot wait to play outside.

“Last night they said they were bored and I am sure as soon as the disinfectant has done its job, they will be happy to play outside again,” says Neumann.
