Metro cleans city

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Clean Neighbourhood Friday took to Kempton Park, Springs and Germiston to cleanup the main taxi ranks and railway stations on Friday.

The campaign is aimed at cleaning up neighbourhoods and illegal dumping spots throughout the city of Ekurhuleni.

Every last Friday of the month has been declared, ‘Clean City Neighbourhood Friday’ and communities are called to do their bit in eliminating dirt by cleaning their surroundings.

Members of the Mayoral Committee, as well as senior managers, officials, members of the business community and the members of taxi associations joined forces to start a culture of maintaining a clean environment that is conducive for business.

Spokesman for the metro, Themba Gadebe, says, “The main cause for concern at all of the facilities was the rodent infestation which poses a health risk to all the users of the facilities.”

To address these concerns, officials responsible for environmental health came prepared to fumigate the areas and applied pest control substances, leaving the facilities purified and smelling fresh and hygienic.

Taxi ranks that were targeted on Friday are now clear of overgrown weeds, the smell of urine and the rodent infestation.

Adolph Singa, chairperson of the Bonaero Park sub-rank in Kempton Park, could not contain his excitement and gratitude upon seeing Ekurhuleni’s top officials rolling up their sleeves and joining the citizens to cleanup the area.

“This has never happened in our lifetime where we see senior government officials coming to clean our taxi ranks with us,” Singa said.

Gadebe urges members of the community to come out in their numbers to do their part in keeping the city clean.
