UPDATE: Suspects take deceased’s service firearm

It has now transpired that the service firearm belonging to EMPD officer Coert Jordaan (40), who was killed at Aston Lake on Wednesday, is also missing.

Jordaan was fishing at the dam at 7am and his body was found by an employee at the dam at 2.30pm.

Information received from Kobedi Mkgoseng, acting EMPD spokesman, indicates that it is not only the deceased’s vehicle and cellphone that were taken from the scene.

“His wallet, containing his EMPD identification card, and his 9mm service pistol were also taken by the suspects,” says Mkgoseng.

He says all law enforcement members, even when they are off-duty, should always have their firearm and service identification with them.

“If the firearm falls into the wrong hands it might be used for criminal acts,” he says.

To try and prevent this the police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, confirms that the EMPD officer was also shot.

The police found two empty 9mm rounds next to the body.

Ramphora says the police will continue their search and investigation until they apprehend the suspects.
