Civilians catch two armed suspects

Two of the three armed men, who robbed a business in Brand Street, Geduld Extension on Wednesday were arrested on the same day.

The three suspects, two armed with firearms and one with a knife, entered the shop at 1.45pm, and pointed their guns at the owner and an employee and demanded cash.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says the employee was assaulted by one of the suspects.

“The employee was hit over the head with the back of a gun,” he says.

The employee sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The suspects took cigarettes worth R300 and R2 000 in cash, a laptop and a cellphone and fled the scene on foot.

Ramphora says the business owner phoned the police who joined hands with the community to chase the suspects.

One suspect was arrested in the street while another suspect was arrested in a house in Reitz Street.

Geduld Extension resident Riaan Croucamp (27) says he informed his mother Desiree Obermeyer (47) to be on the lookout as one of the suspects was seen jumping over their wall.

The police assisted them in the search for the suspect, but the suspect was nowhere to be found.

“It was when my mother went back inside the house that she noticed the shower door in the bathroom was closed,” says Croucamp.

Obermeyer says she was shocked to find the suspect hiding in her shower.

She claims the suspect begged her three times to “Please let me go, I won’t do it again”.

The business owner who caught the suspect in Reitz Street, claims the suspect was armed with a knife and tried to stab him three times.

The suspect was taken back to the shop in Brand Street, where the owner recognised him as one of the armed suspects.

The third suspect allegedly fled on foot towards Geduld Road where he reportedly dumped the firearm and the stolen goods.

The SAPS K9 Dog Unit was called to the scene to help with the search for the firearm.

The two suspects, aged 20 and 25 years were arrested for business robbery.

They will appear in court soon.
