Community up in arms about cemetery

Ekurhuleni Metro has yet to comment on the demolition of the cemetery reported by the Addie.

Mike du Toit, Chairman of Springs Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Gert Parsons from Afriforum both firmly state that the Geduld Cemetery will not be demolished.

Mike and Gert both believe that if there are plans for a demolition it is the old building which was used by Jewish people for bathing bodies, which is no longer used.

“The Jewish cemetery is full and the building no longer has any use,” says Gert.

“The cemetery is not safe and there are homeless people living in the empty buildings,” adds Mike.

The article written by the Addie has raised many concerns and the newsroom has received an influx of comments from residents in the Springs area, as many have family buried at the cemetery.

Over the past two weeks numerous attempts by the Addie to get comment from metro (to clarify previous comments made by the metro) have gone unanswered.
