Blocked sewage too close to Blesbokspruit.

Derek McCarogher (56), an Edelweiss resident believes that the blocked sewage pipe running into Blesbokspruit is caused by illegal miners.

Derek often rides his mountain bike along the Blesbokspruit embankment and he claims the pipe has been blocked for over a year.

“I have lodged a complaint with Ekurhuleni Metro and I have posted on Clydesdale CPF’s Facebook page about the continuous problem,” says Derek.

Derek believes that illegal miners have intentionally blocked the sewage for their own use.

“The smell is horrendous and the area where the sewage overflows is unhygienic,” says Derek.

Blesbokspruit is a conservation priority as it forms an important component of the tributaries of the Vaal river.

The wetland is classified as a Ramsar site, a site of high importance.

“Unblocking the pipe is extremely important for the species living in Blesbokspruit,” says Derek.

The Addie is still awaiting comment from the metro regarding the blocked sewage.
