A marriage built on a rock

Corrie (75) and Margie (68) Weideman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday.

This Strubenvale Extension couple is still as much in love now as when they were married on January 2, 1965.

Five Weideman generations came together at their house to celebrate the happy occasion on Saturday.

Looking back Corrie says it was love at first sight.

“Seeing her walking down the aisle at the Springs AGS Church in Geduld on our wedding day, was just a confirmation that she is the one for me,” he says.

And now 50 years later, they believe their love of God and each other is the recipe for their happiness.

His late uncle Danie Beetge introduced the two and the wedding proposal was a secret between Corrie and Margie’s late father, Jan van der Merwe.

Corrie says when he put the engagement ring on Margie’s ring finger, he told her it was forever and nothing would separate them, except death.

He says his love for her is just as wide and big as the ocean.

Margie was only 17 years old when they met, but it was not a problem to her, as she knew Corrie was the right man for her.

“We got engaged on my father’s birthday and the wedding was like a dream come true,” she says.

She had never been to the coast and for their honeymoon Corrie decided to take her to Durban.

At present Corrie is ill and on oxygen, and Margie takes good care of him.

“We are very close and I don’t know what I will do if anything happens to him,” she says.

She adds that without their family, friends and neighbours their life will be empty.

Together they look forward to the future as long as they are together.
