Help your child to be ready for school

Adjusting to a new environment can be difficult for young children, getting them into a new regime might also take time.

Parents who have children who will be going to primary school next year can assist their children by teaching them basic skills that they will need to get through their first year of primary school.

You can follow these simple guidelines to ensure your child doesn’t struggle at school:

  • Read with your child on a daily basis as reading is an important tool for children to do well at school.
  • Practise listening skills as it is a challenge for children from nursery school to wait their turn to speak.
  • Teach them self reliance as teachers can only help a child who also tries.

Teach them basis things like how to tie their shoes, unbutton shirts and open their own lunch box.

  • Talk to them about bullying and standing up for themselves.

Many children may encounter this challenge at a new school and environment.

  • Buy them educational toys so they learn shapes, colours, how to count.

These are the basic things they will be taught in their first year of school.

Parents can train their children at home so they are equipped to handle their first year of school.
