A must read for any new puppy owner

Getting a pet for Christmas or a birthday is probably one of the best gifts a child or animal lover can receive, but they are hard work. Read here how to start out.

Keep in mind though, a puppy, with its cuteness, is a lot of work and can be draining.

Many people who receive puppies as a gift are not prepared for the unexpected surprise and do not fully realise the responsibility that comes along with it.

Firstly, make sure you have all the necessary supplies to raise a puppy:

  • Chew toys

Make sure you have a lot of chew toys as puppies are going to chew on something as they are teething. If you do not want it to be your shoes, get a lot of toys.

  • Treats

Not only is this the highlight of a puppy’s day, but this will make house-training much easier and will also improve the bond between pup and human.

  • Puppy food

Ensure that you buy the correct dog food, remember, a growing pup needs certain nutrients for their development stage.

Buying just any dog food will not do.

Also remember to give them the correct amount, ask the local vet or a pet shop assistant how much to give your dog.

This differs depending on the breed and size of the dog.

  • Bedding and bowls

Dogs should always have a safe and comfortable spot to sleep in.

Depending on where the puppy will sleep, get a soft dog pillow-bed or cosy crate where the dog can sleep. Put a chew toy with it so it can learn at an early stage where its designated sleeping spot is.

Have two bowls on hand for food and water.

  • Cleaning supplies

A definite necessity as puppies are messy and not yet house trained and will cause a mess.

Clean this up immediately or as soon as possible to give the puppy the message that this is not the place.
