Contravention of water restrictions

A leaking fire hose was allegedly connected to a fire hydrant at a private residence in Christopher Street, Selection Park at 8pm last Wednesday.

It is alleged that two men, dressed in Ekurhuleni Disaster and Management Services (DEMS) attire, arrived at the premises, in a red truck, dropped off the fire hose and left the scene at 9.30pm.

Selection Park resident, Gail van Niekerk, witnessed the two men dropping off the hose and connecting it to the fire hydrant.

“I saw the hose through the main gate onto the premises of a house where a swimming pool was recently build,” she says.

Van Niekerk is concerned about the water wasted from the leaking hose.

She says in an article in the Addie (‘Water restrictions in place‘, November 19), Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni Metro spokesman, said a fine will be issued to households for contravention of these restrictions.

“Will this resident be fined the R6 196 as mentioned in the article in the Addie?” she asks.

In the article Gadebe said: “No filling of swimming pools, no irrigation of gardens with hosepipes or sprinklers is allowed at at any time and failure to adhere to the restrictions will result in penalties.”

William Ntladi, DEMS spokesman, says they acknowledge the complaint, however, it is not going to be easy to be investigated due to the registration number of the vehicle.

“Without a registration number we cannot complete our investigation,” he adds.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of going to press.
