Toys flying everywhere at toy run

Toys were flying through the air at the mass ride for the 33rd annual Gauteng Motorcycle Toy Run which kicked off at Carnival City on Sunday where Springs bikers eagerly joined in.

Carnival City provided one of the starting points for the hundreds of motorcyclists who participated in the mass ride to Benoni Northerns Club.

Various biker clubs from across Gauteng participated in the mass ride from four venues in the north, south, east and west of Gauteng to collect gifts and toys for underprivileged children.

Hundreds of bikers from Springs also took part in the massive toy run.

Henry Harber from the Wild Wild Guardians says there were masses of bikers from Springs, which include the Wild Wild Guardians, Lost Bikers, the Mutts, Sting Biker Club and Shadow Riders.

“We were a large group of bikers who attended the toy run,” he says.

Each year, some 20 000 bikers participate in the mass ride and over 25 000 gifts are collected to be distributed to service clubs and children-related charity organisations so that the children can celebrate Christmas with a gift.

Many spectators waited at the Benoni Northerns Club to watch the bikers arrive and join in the fun.

There were over a hundred stalls that sold food and crafts, a sound stage with two live bands, entertainment and a beer garden.

The entrance fee for the day was a toy.

The grounds buzzed with thousands of people who came to support the day.

Thousands of motorbikes lined the grounds and revved their engines to roaring to raise the excitement level as Gauteng reached out to children in need.

Cheryl Havenga from the Rotary Club of Springs, who was also present on the day and assisted with counting the toys, says more than 23 500 toys were donated on the day.

“There were quite a lot of educational toys such as books, stationery and other toys,” she says.

When asked how many bikers she guessed there to be, she laughingly said “tens of thousands of bikers, it was brilliant”.
