Don’t leave valuables in your car

Springs – Springs police continue to encourage community members to ensure they remove all valuables from their vehicles, so as not to attract criminals.

This comes after a Daveyton resident, Raymond Mokoena’s Toyota Tazz was broken into on Saturday afternoon and his car radio was stolen.

The incident took place at the corner of 5th Street and 6th Avenue in the Springs CBD, at about 3pm, while Mokoena was attending an event at the Springs Hall.

“I went to fetch something from my car, when I realised the passenger window was open.

“For a second, I thought I had left it open by mistake, but when I walked closer to the car I saw that the window had been smashed and my car radio had been taken.

“Luckily the culprits just took the radio and left my phones and wallet,” says Mokoena.

Springs police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora encourages locals to follow the following safety tips to try and ensure that their vehicles remain safe.

n Do not leave your car unattended.

n Have an alarm system or tracker installed in your vehicle.

n Always keep the vehicle locked.

n Have lock nuts on your wheels.

n Keep valuables in your car out of sight. Rather lock them away in the boot.

n Put all your valuables and firearm in a lockable safe when at home.

Ramphora says although this is no guarantee that your car won’t be targeted, it could help ensure you don’t become a victim of crime.
