New feathered arrivals welcomed at duck pond

Selection Park residents Kathy Preston (66) and her husband Henry Preston (61) are overjoyed about the new arrivals at the George Sutter Park duck pond.

The park is now home to Mallard ducklings.

When Kathy first noticed the mother and her six ducklings, she was overwhelmed.

Two of the ducklings sadly died, but the other four are getting stronger by the day.

The Prestons have been feeding the geese and ducks at the pond since last year.

Kathy says they get lettuce from a local businessman and Springs resident as a treat for their feathered friends.

The birds know Kathy and when she calls them, they come running to her.

The couple also employ a casual labourer to pick up the litter and empty the dustbins at the park.

“We give him black bags to put the litter in and then we take it to a landfill site,” she says.

At the moment there is a small white duck nesting in a tree stump and the couple cannot wait for these ducklings.
