One man’s trash is not his neighbour’s treasure

Residents need to take their neighbours into consideration when refusing to comply with the Ekurhuleni Metro's wheelie bin system.

Kobus Etsebeth (73), who has lived in his house in Paul Krugersoord for more than 30 years, claims his neighbours have no regard for anyone in the street.

He says they put their refuse bags on the pavement for collection, knowing full well it won’t be collected unless it is in a wheelie bin.

Etsebeth says the bags have been piling up for more than three weeks and the heap is now right next to his wall.

“Not only are the bags torn to shreds and it looks horrible, but the smell is becoming truly unbearable and it’s disgusting to have to live with it,” he says.

He claims the neighbours told him they are in arrears with their municipal account and they are therefore unable to receive a wheelie bin.

“I have been to the municipality and the health department, but no one is willing to help with the situation,” says Etsebeth.

“What are we supposed to do if we follow the rules and get wheelie bins for our rubbish, but the neighbours can’t be bothered?

“Now we have to sit with the stench and try to sort it out.”

He adds that the metro must be able to implement a plan of action in such instances.

The Addie is awaiting comment from the metro.
