Rubble removed from site of old building

The old Spar building in the CBD, considered a 'problem' by many residents and business owners, has been demolished and all the rubble was removed on Friday.

According to Gert Parson from the Springs Afriforum branch, about 1 000 cubic metres of building rubble was removed from the property.

A contract worker, Simon Malapane, assisted with the demolishing process by helping his workers clean all the bricks.

“I just wanted the bricks,” he says.

“Everyone involved cooperated and within three months the property is clean of rats, drug dealers and vagrants occupying it,” says Gert.

He is grateful to Willie Durandt and Bennie Kock, two Springs businessmen, who offered their help free of charge.

Willie provided a front end loader to complete the project by removing the rubble and Bennie offered a truck to load some of the rubble.

“The rest of the rubble was removed by contractors,” says Gert.

The last step is to sweep the side walks and replace the paving bricks that were lifted during the demolition process.
