EMPD issue fines at taxi rank

The EMPD fined several residents during a special cleanup operation held at the Springs main taxi rank between 9am and 2pm on Friday.

Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman says as a result of the operation, 18 people found repairing vehicles were fined, 12 unlicenced vehicles were issued with fines, 10 vehicles discontinued for serious defects, one stolen weed-eater recovered, four knives confiscated, one bag of dagga seized and three trolleys filled with detergent confiscated from hawkers.

The cleanup operation was carried out after the Springs Customer Relations Management team and the mayor, Mondli Gungubele, recently visited the taxi rank and raised concerns about the crime and illegal activities taking place at the rank.

Following the visit the EMPD team comprising of the precinct officers, K9 Unit members, Equestrian Unit members, the By-Laws Unit and the Peace Corps members decided to conduct a cleanup operation at the taxi rank.

Law enforcement officers noticed nearby businesses using the taxi rank to store their vehicles overnight, which is reportedly another illegal activity.

“Plans are in progress to conduct night operations at the rank to address this problem,” says Kgasago.
