Metro building in park will not be demolished

Residents of Essex Street, Springs Extension, have been complaining about the state of the park and the small building situated on the park's premises for months on end.

The park is situated on the corner of Essex and Broad streets.

Springs Extension resident Sibusiso Mbonani is particularly concerned about the safety of the residents living in the vicinity of the park.

She claims thieves and drug addicts frequent the building at night, making it unsafe for residents.

“The building has been abandoned for years,” Sibusiso says.

She visited the Ekurhuleni Metro‘s office in Springs and asked them to demolish the building as she believes it serves no purpose.

“I was informed by the metro to write a letter or send an email to their offices stating my request and upon receiving it, they will do a follow-up on the query,” she says.

Sibusiso sent an email and after months without any response, she called the metro and sent another email requesting the building be demolished.

After a year without any joy, she called the Addie for assistance.

She is adamant the park is unsafe because of the empty building.

Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, says the building is used as a storage facility.

“The building is far from the houses in the area and is being used for metro equipment storage,” he says.

“It is a metro asset and can’t be demolished.”

He adds that the community is urged to report any criminal activities to Springs police or the EMPD.
