SBHS Remembrance Day service

Springs Boys' High School's Remembrance Day was well attended.

Springs Boys’ High School (SBHS) held its annual Remembrance Day service in honour of former pupils who were killed in action during World War II, the Korean War and the Border War on Wednesday.

The service started with a school prayer recited by Thorne Earl, chief executive officer for 2016.

The four SBHS matriculants who died in these wars are:

Malcolm Dick (19),who died during a night flight on March 13, 1944.

He matriculated in 1942.

Lieut William Alan Gale (20) was declared Missing in Action after flying over Normandy on August 24, 1944.

He was presumed dead on January 26, 1945. He matriculated from the school in 1941.

Lieut Jack Norman Lellyet (23), who matriculated in 1946, was killed in Korea in March 1952.

Candidate Officer (pilot) Gerard Genis (19) was killed on December 13, 1977, in his Impala Mk II Jet. He left SBHS in 1976.

Two former pupils died while serving in the SA Defence Force: Lieut Leslie Gullian died in 1961 and Capt Jonathan Inggs in 1985.

The roll of honour was read by principal, Andre French, and this was followed by a service by the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moths).

“The service commemorates not only ex-pupils who lost their lives in service of the country, but all people who gave their tomorrow so that we can have a better today,” says Andre.

The SBHS brass band led the ceremony with Amazing Grace, the National Anthem and the school song.

Many teachers and students were also remembered on this day.

The heat didn’t deter families and friends from laying wreaths at the Remembrance Wall for those who will always be remembered at the school.

Marius Lezar, deputy principal, recited the benediction (blessing) at the end of the service.
