The temperatures are rising and summer is here, and now is the time for fun in the sun.
For animals, such as long haired dogs,the sun can be too hot and very dangerous.
While you are out of the house, whether it be at work or the mall, your dog is baking in the outside temperatures, hunting for a spot in the cooler shade.
Try this brilliant idea to keep your dogs both cool and entertained while you are out.
Recipe 1: chicken and vegetable ice block (for large dogs, divide in half for smaller dogs):
Ingredients:
- 500ml water
- 100g cooked chicken
- 50g carrot
- 50g zucchini
- 20g broccoli
- 20g cheese
You will need an empty plastic container, for larger dogs use an ice cream container, to freeze the ingredients in.
This will ensure that the dogs do not eat it whole, it will melt slowly and lasts longer than a smaller ice cube.
Directions:
- Grate the carrot and zucchini and put aside in a bowl.
- Grate cheese, put half of the grated cheese in the bowl with the grated carrot and zucchini, set the rest aside.
- Dice a small sprig of broccoli, about 20g, place in the bowl with the other vegetables.
- Cut the chicken into small pieces and place into the plastic container.
- Mix vegetables with chicken in plastic container.
- Fill with water.
- Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.
- Put the container’s lid on and freeze overnight.
Once frozen, remove the ice block from the freezer, open the lid and run water over the ice block.
Tip onto the ground and let your dog enjoy.
Tips:
Always be careful what vegetables you give your dog as some can have deadly effects.
You can substitute the vegetables in the recipe above, for something listed below.
NOTE: Please research any fruit or vegetables that are not on the list before giving to your dog.
Give:
- Broccoli
- Cabbage
- Capsicum
- Carrot
- Celery
- Parsley
- Zucchini
- Cauliflower
- Apples – cored
- Bananas
- Blueberries
- Honeydew melon
- Orange – no pips
- Rockmelon
- Strawberries
- Watermelon
Never give:
- Asparagus
- Corn
- Green peas
- Lima beans
- Onions
- Potatoes
- Avocado
- Black cherries
- Grapes
- Plums
- Raisins
- Rhubarb
- Tomato
Some dogs may not enjoy the large amount of vegetables, so add a bit of chicken stock with the water for a more delicious taste.
Recipe 2: surprise ice block (for large dogs, divide in half for smaller dogs):
Ingredients:
- 500ml water
- 60g chicken
- 50g apple
- 30g cheese
- 20g sausage or your dog’s favourite treat
Once again you will need an empty plastic container to freeze the ingredients in.
Directions:
- Grate cheese and apple (do not grate apple core) and set aside.
- Cut chicken into small pieces and set aside.
- Cut sausage or your dog’s favourite treat.
- Place all of the ingredients into the plastic container.
- Pour water into container.
- Put the container’s lid on and freeze overnight.
Once frozen, remove the ice block from the freezer, open the lid and run water over the ice block.
Tip onto the ground and let your dog enjoy.
Tips:
Alter the recipes to your dog’s taste or favourite flavours.
These ice blocks provide extra hydration as well as an icy treat.
Make several at a time and freeze them so you will have many in stock.
