EMPD arrest eight illegal miners in Everest

Two minors among the eight illegal miners arrested in Everest informal settlement on Friday.

Members of the EMPD Community Liaison Unit (CLU) received information form reliable sources about illegal mining activities in Everest informal settlement.

EMPD spokesman, Wilfred Kgasago, says they received the information from reliable sources.

When the CLU members arrived at the illegal activity site they arrested all eight suspects.

Two of the suspects are minors aged 15 and 16 years.

“We found equipment for digging, burning, sifting, refining and storing the final mining product which suspects claim is handed to someone called Anthony whose address and other particulars is unknown,” says Kgasago.

The illegal mining equipment were confiscated and had to be transported in four metro police light delivery vans.

The eight suspects were taken to the Springs Police Station.

The were charged for illegal mining and are expected to appear in court on Monday.
