Seniors enjoy Jill’s trips

Jill Levitas’ (66) love for the theatre and elderly people is why this Selcourt resident recently took 30 senior citizens to the Private Presley ballet show at the Joburg Theatre.

Jill has a passion for making senior citizens happy as they are often depressed and lonely and regularly takes people in need of friendship and fellowship on these outings.

An ex-Springs resident Darryl Smith, who currently owns a franchise in Selcourt, sponsored the recent trip by giving the group the comfort of a luxury 30-seater bus and a delicious breakfast.

“The meal, which included chicken and chips, or toasted sandwiches, cold drink or coffee, was a wonderful gesture and thoroughly enjoyed by all,” says Jill.

She has been organising these trips to musicals, ballets, ice shows and pantomimes for the past five years and takes about 30 to 60 people per trip to about 12 shows per year.

Organising these events is a mammoth task but it brings so much joy to Jill.

“Seeing their happy faces at the end of a trip is most rewarding and satisfying,” she says.

Another huge task is to get sponsors to pay for the buses to enable the seniors to afford the ticket for the relevant show.

She books shows well in advance and has already booked several events for 2016 as this ensures that the best seats available are booked for some of the people with disabilities.
