Ebotse murder case continues

The hearing of murder accused, Retief Liebenberg, started in the Pretoria High Court on Monday where he pleaded not guilty to two murder charges.

Liebenberg, a Springs businessman, was arrested on October 31, 2013, in connection with the shooting of 19-year-old Dewalt “Poenie” Visser and his father Dewalt Visser (46), in his Benoni home.

The cases is being heard by judge Mahomed Ishmail who heard the state’s first witness, a pathologist, testifying on the bullet wounds found on the bodies.

The first policeman on the scene was also called to the stand.

The hearing will be heard until Friday or until all witnesses have testified.

The double murder took place at the Ebotse Estate in Rynfield, Benoni, when Liebenberg shot dead his daughter’s boyfriend and the boyfriend’s father.

Both men died on scene.

He was arrested on the same day of the shooting and appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on two counts of murder.

During his bail application hearing on November 15, 2013, magistrate Ian Cox granted Liebenberg bail of R50 000.

On June 17, Liebenberg briefly appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court where Cox transferred the case to the Delmas High Court.

He also extended Liebenberg’s bail of R50 000.

The case was due to start in Delmas on March 25, but was moved to the Pretoria High Court by the Director of Public Prosecution where it is now being heard.
