Firearm used in assault recovered in cemetery

Members from the EMPD's First Responder Unit (RFU) arrested a man suspected of robbing and injuring another man in Welgedacht on Sunday.

The members were conducting routine patrols at 11am when they were stopped by a man, who was bleeding profusely and claimed to have been beaten and robbed by three men with a firearm.

Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman, says the man gave the members a good description of his three attackers.

The RFU members noticed the three men near the Everest informal settlement and a chase ensued.

The suspects separated and ran in three different directions and the members were only able to apprehend one of the men, who was positively identified by the victim as the one who had a firearm.

The suspect, a Gugulethu informal settlement resident, led the metro police to Petersfield Cemetery where he claimed the firearm was dumped.

“We found the loaded firearm with two live rounds at the cemetery,” says Kgasago.

The man was charged with attempted robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as assault.

The 22-year-old suspect was taken to the Springs police cells.

He will appear in court soon.

A manhunt is underway for the two suspects who evaded arrest.
