Esda builds a new home for dementia sufferers

The Esda Frail Care and Community Centre is upgrading one of their buildings to accommodate residents suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

“The accommodation is very neat and has a homely atmosphere where safety is of high importance,” says Petro Burr-Dixon, Esda administrator.

The centre’s management decided at a meeting in August to renovate an existing building to accommodate these residents.

Phase one of the renovation included fixing the bathrooms, tiling the floors, painting and erecting a palisade fence around the building.

Petro says their aim is to complete the second phase soon, which will include the installation of blinds, built-in cupboards, furnishing of the rooms with hospital beds and screen curtains.

Once completed, they will be able to provide a home to 16 people and there is also a lovely, enclosed garden where the residents can sit and relax.

People with Alzheimer‘s disease and dementia need stimulation, healthy diets and general care, which will also be provided by staff at the centre.

The plan is to have the centre up and running in November.

“To finalise and complete this project in full any donation in kind will be highly appreciated,” says Petro.
