You’re never too old to learn
Babs Ellis (79) is a Selection Park resident with a mission.
Reading and studying is part of her daily life and without it Babs would be lost.
The determined woman received her B.Prok degree (LLB degree) at the University of South Africa in 1994.
She was a legal secretary for many years and everything about the law fascinated her.
A few years after her son John Ellis died, she remembered how he encouraged her to study law.
“It was hard work with a lot of dedication, but I did it,” she says.
She recently completed a diploma in the English language at the University of the Witwatersrand.
“I am fascinated by the English language,” she says.
It took her three months of intensive studying and hard work.
She still works full time and travels to Johannesburg with her brother Danie Oelofse (70) who works at the same company.
Born in Vredefort, in the Free State, Babs moved to Springs 35 years ago.
She worked full time as a legal secretary and after hours and on weekends, Babs would help her late husband, Valentine Ellis, in his Park Fish and Chips shop.
“I still found the time to read and do a few courses as well,” she says.
Another dream she wishes to pursue is to convert one of the rooms in the front of her house into a classroom and teach English.
Babs will have to teach on Saturdays depending on the need.
She is a woman who likes to keep busy and is in the process of publishing her first book titled, In the Shadow of the Hills.
“Once published, it will be another milestone I can add to my bucket list,” she says.
