‘Police’ gang hijack truck

A truck was hijacked on the N12 highway on Friday by a gang posing as police officers.

The 34-year-old driver, travelling in a white Freightliner Argosy truck, was en route to make a delivery at 5pm, when he heard a siren and saw the vehicle behind him flashing its lights.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the driver believed he was being pulled over by police, so he stopped near the Etwatwa off-ramp.

A man and woman, dressed in police uniform, asked the driver for his driver’s licence.

Ramphora says the driver claims the pair asked him to open the back of the truck to inspect his cargo.

When they got to the back of the truck, the two tied up the driver and took him to their vehicle.

While instructing him to lie down, the driver noticed two more ‘police officers‘.

Ramphora says the driver was later dropped off in Tembisa and reported the incident to the Olifantsfontein Police Station.

The hijacking case was transferred to Springs.
