Leak ‘not important’ to metro

Bakerton residents are fed up with excuses from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

Resident Salima Seedat says the municipality is not worried about a water leak on her property.

“We reported a water leak at our water meter two weeks ago, but they have not sent someone to resolve the issue,” she says.

Seedat explains that they were without water for four days as they had to close the water to stop it from running down the street.

“Every time we opened the water, it would flow in the street and later on we paid a plumber to dig a hole and fix the leak that was on our side, but it is still leaking on the council’s side of the meter and they cannot fix it,” she says.

Seedat says she was told the municipality has a backlog of three months and that the problem may not be solved until then.

“We never had any problems with the old meter, but since the new one was installed, we have had regular problems,” she says.

“Then they tell me that if my bill is high, I must take it to them and they will check my previous months’ meter readings and bill me on that, but if we struggle so much with this, how long will that process take?

“This is precious, clean drinking water and they don’t care, they’re just not worried about it as if it is not important to them.”

The Addie is awaiting comment from the metro.
