Protect animals during the heatwave

The extreme weather conditions affect all animals and the onus is on the public to ensure animals have enough shade and drinking water at their disposal.

As heatwave conditions are expected to prevail in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga for several more days, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) appeals to the public to protect their animals during the heatwave.

It is recommended that companion animals are not taken out in vehicles except for emergency situations such as visits to the veterinarian.

Avoid walking or exercising dogs in the heat of the day and be aware that the heat retained in tarred roads or hot pavements can damage the paws of animals.

Rather wait until temperatures drop towards the end of the day or take a break from exercising your animals whilst temperatures soar.

In heatwave conditions, rabbit owners should move the hutch indoors and out of any direct sunlight.

Working animals such as security dogs or donkeys used for transport need to be monitored carefully to avoid dehydration, fatigue and heatstroke.

Farm animals and captive wild animals are dependent upon the human population for the provision of shade and water.

The public is asked to take the necessary precautions regarding their own animals and to not only ensure their well-being during the hot spell but also to be alert to issues affecting other animals that are confined or chained.
