Five bodies discovered at Grootvlei Mine Shaft

The bodies of five suspected illegal miners were found on Monday (September 28).

They were discovered in an open field between Bakerton and Grootvlei Mine Shaft Four by community members, who alerted the Springs SAPS.

SAPS provincial spokesman Capt Tsekiso Mofokeng says the bodies of the five men were full of bruises and wounds.

The men are believed to be between 22 and 30 years of age.

“We cannot say for sure if they were shot as the bodies were hacked with a sharp object,” he says.

Police are awaiting the post-mortem results.According to Mofokeng, police suspect the men were killed by a rival illegal mining group.

Police appeal to the community to inform them of any illegal activities in the area.

Mofokeng also appeals to the illegal mining groups to come forward and talk to police in order to resolve any problems.

“This discussion between the miners and the SAPS can restore peace to Springs and Grootvlei,” he concludes.
