SAPS find weapons and explosives next to creche

The Springs SAPS Crime Prevention Unit seized firearms, ammunition and explosives in a shack next to a creche in Everest Informal Settlement today.

According to Springs police spokesman, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the police followed up on information they received about firearms reportedly hidden in a shack.

“Making this discovery next to a creche where children are supposed to be protected during the day is not safe to the environment they live in,” Ramphora says.

According to Ramphora when the police arrived at the scene, the occupants of the shack fled the scene on foot.

“The police chased after them but they disappeared into thin air,” he says.

Police had to use force to gain entry into the locked shack.

Upon searching the room, the police found a R1 rifle with 17 live rounds of ammunition wrapped in a blanket and hidden under a carpet.

Among the rubble in the room police discovered two socks that contained a 9mm Baretta pistol, 13 live rounds of ammunition and a Browning firearm with eight live rounds of ammunition.

Nine pendukas, used for illegal mining, were also found on the premises. Ramphora says the police also found detonators and explosives in the shack.

While at the scene, the police received information of more firearms allegedly buried on the premises.

The police are still at the scene searching for more firearms. The K9-unit was called out to the scene to assist the police in their investigation.
