Lights out for elderly

Leonie Biselli, a senior citizen from Molendam municipal housing, says she and other residents have been living in the dark for the past two weeks.

She says even after she reported the matter to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, their building was still without power for a week.

“The street lights were also off every night,” says Biselli.

She adds that this is a very serious risk for the elderly people living there.

Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni spokesman, says the neutral of the electricity source for the street lights was cut off by unknown people.

“The reason for the buildings being out with the street lights is that it was originally constructed in one circuit,” he says.

He adds that they were tending to the matter and found that there was a cable fault which took them time to locate.

Gadebe concludes by saying the matter was finally closed on Monday.
