No light at the end of the tunnel for Springs Rugby Club

The high mast lights at the Springs Rugby Club (SRC) have been a problem for the club for a long time.

Due to vandalism, some of the cables on one or two of the posts have been cut.

Some bulbs also need to be replaced and only a few of the lights are working.

This is an issue the club’s chairperson, Rudolph Cronje, has raised with the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Parks Department on numerous occasions.

Due to most of the lights not working, the rugby teams have to practice during the evenings at local schools.

Cronje says he has reported this to the parks department numerous times and has met with several people from the council. He requested the replacement of bulbs in January and reports that the metro promised they would be replaced.

This has still not happened.

The metro recently sent out an assessor to investigate the problem at the club.

When Cronje phoned to ask for feedback, he was allegedly informed a tender was allocated and granted but there were no money which led to the tender expiring.

He says the metro recently claimed there are no finances for the fixing of the lights.

The metro gave assurances that the SRC will be first on the priority list in the next financial year, which started in July.

A meeting was set up for August 24 between Cronje, the ward councillor for the area, Dean Stone, and the metro.

“Unfortunately it was only Stone, myself and one metro representative who attended the meeting,” says Cronje.

Cronje says the club members are proud of their club, but need the metro to come onboard.

He claims he also suggested the bulbs from PAM Brink Stadium be removed and used at the SRC.

The club is doing well and the u-21 team recently won the Valke Perigrene League and the Assupol League.

The club also hosted the Cell C Community Cup for the first time this year.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of going to print.
