WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT: Unborn calf lying next to mother’s slaughtered carcass

A slaughtered cow with only its intestines and head left, was seen lying next to the road in Hills Road this morning (Thursday) with her unborn calf lying next to her.

Her legs were cut off and the head was only attached by the spine, all the meat was cut off and the intestines and bones were left with the carcass.

A passing motorist approached the Addie at the scene and alleged that a collision resulted in the death of the animal.

He says a vehicle collided with the cow when it was crossing the road late on Wednesday evening.

The cow was then slaughtered for the meat and left to rot on the side of the road.

The witness adds that the cattle grazing next to the road have to be removed to prevent future incidents such as this.

Details of the accident are sketchy at the moment as the Addie is awaiting comment from Ekurhuleni Emergency Services.

Celeste Kleyn from the Springs SPCA says they went out to the scene after they were informed about the incident to see see if the cow was alive or dead.

“The cow was dead when we arrived and it is now the responsibility of the cleansing department to remove the carcass,” she says.

She adds that they have been trying to get hold of the cleansing department the entire day to inform them about the incident, but have been unable to get hold of them.

“The SPCA does not remove dead animals, when an animal is dead, we cannot do anything about the situation.”

The Addie is awaiting comment from Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
