New digs for senior citizens

Several residents of the Springs Retirement Village moved into their brand new cottages on Wednesday morning.

The building of the 10 cottages started earlier this year when management from the Methodist Homes for the Aged (MHA) discovered the need for extra units, and added the luxury units to the renovation list.

Some of the residents were moved to their new homes and were overwhelmed by what they saw.

Gwen Massyn shed tears of joy when she saw the cottage.

“We cannot thank the wonderful people involved enough for what they have done for us,” she says.

The cottage consists of a spacious room with an en suite bathroom and a front porch.

Gwen was elated when she saw the porch and says she can now finally learn how to crochet on her front porch in the morning sun.

Rona McAughey (81) is also one of the residents who moved.

Rona worked for the retirement village for 25 years before she also became a resident.

“This place is absolutely beautiful, we couldn’t be happier,” she says.

MHA site manager Theresa Fry also became slightly emotional at the joy experienced by the residents.

“Money cannot buy happiness like that,” she says.

Methodist Homes for the Aged has 14 homes and retirement villages, including the Springs Retirement Village,
