Springs tutors receive awards

The first Peermont CSI Awards took place on August 25 at Emperors Palace.

This prestigious awards, dubbed ‘the Oscars’ of the CSI world, celebrated and recognised the hard working people that make the Peermont CSI community projects a success.

Springs residents and educators Gerhard Brits, Jelena Labuschagne, Adri Croucamp, Devan Reddy, Kishan Bodalina and Olwethu Mkaza received awards on the evening.

The Peermont CSI programme consists of four pillars including education, youth development, environment and entrepreneurial enrichment.

Since 2005 Peermont Children’s Trust have sponsored the Star School programme in Springs.

“The project focus on extra lessons in maths, science and English to ensure that there are a larger number of learners to enter university,” says Jenny Findley, Peermont Education Trust manager.

Gerhard, principal of Pinegrove Primary School, was acknowledged for his decade-long involvement with the Star Schools Project in Springs.

He received a Long Service Award. Gerhard was the coordinator of the project and was recognised for his dedication to education.

Jelena, a teacher from Dr Johan Jurgens High School, received the Top English Tutor Award and Adri, a teacher from Hoërskool Die Anker in Brakpan, was awarded with the Top Science Tutor Award.

Devan and Kishan, both teachers at Springs Secondary School, received the Top Maths Tutor awards as a result of their learners achieving a 100% pass rate in maths.

Olwethu, an ex-student of the Springs Star Schools programme, can follow her dream of becoming a chef after she obtained a Professional Cookery Certificate through the Lesedi Skills Programme.

“The awards are given to projects that follow and uphold the Peermont values,” says Jenny.

The Star School Springs programme is one of the projects the Peermont Children’s Trust is involved in.

It is also a CSI initiative of Emperors Palace.

Jenny says they sponsor 250 learners annually to attend extra lessons in maths, English and physical science.

“Our programme has a natural progression,” says Vusi Zwane, Peermont Group Corporate Affairs executive.

“We have instituted a pipeline that starts with the foundation school years and continues until the youth become economically active, either through full-time employment or by starting their own businesses,” he adds.
