The weapon, which turned out to be a fake, was confiscated by police.
Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says a teacher was informed about the gun by other learners.
The teacher confronted the learner in question and he handed over the gun.
Police members spoke to the learner and his parents.
A case of possession of a dangerous weapon and imitation firearm was opened at the police station.
Ramphora says the case is still being investigated.
