Audiologist helps senior citizens

Presidentia residents underwent hearing screening and diagnostic hearing assessments in the hall on their premises in Brand Street, Paul Krugersoord, on Friday.

It was the first of a few visits scheduled for the senior citizens.

Yolandi du Plessis, who represents a local audiology firm, says she replaced earpiece tubes and conducted some repairs, but mostly just checked the hearing aids.

She says it is important to check for ear infections as well.

A few residents were referred to their general practitioners or specialists after problems were identified during the screening.

Yolandi says the screening was done free of charge.

Resident David Pienaar (82) was happy to hear that there are no problems with his ears, whereas Eddie Dengler (71) complained about his ears itching all the time.

Yolandi asked him if he suffers from sinus as this can sometimes be the cause of itchy ears.

After she checked his ears, Eddie was referred to his doctor to prescribe something that might help with the problem.

Needless to say, after she checked his ears, she said he should visit his doctor to prescribe something that might help with the problem.

“We are forever grateful to the company who assisted us today,” says Petra Verwey, the caretaker at Presidentia.

She says as long as the residents are satisfied with the assistance given by Yolandi, she is happy.

Another visit will take place in two weeks time, when more screenings and diagnostic hearing assessments will be done
