Some schools experience hiccoughs with online admissions

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) aims to have all 2016 pupils placed by October 2015.

Phumla Sekhonyane, GDE spokesperson, says the GDE will no longer process any school admission applications at the beginning of the year.

This will help with the admissions procedure as the department processed over 20 000 late applicants in January.

Andre French, Springs Boys’ High School principal, says it is about communication between the GDE and the schools.

However, the process is being dealt with between the department and the schools before the beginning of the new academic school year.

Frans Styger, principal of Hoërskool Hugenote says his school admissions are well in place and that they will deal with late comers in the new year.

“There are unforeseen circumstances including job transfers or relocation which are mostly the reasons for late registrations,” he says.

Styger claims it is the GDE’s responsibility to educate children and therefore the children, including late comers, have to be accommodated.

Japie Schmidt, chairman of Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck’s School Governing Body (SGB), says the school has completed almost 75 percent of their admissions.

“The admission process is an ongoing process where parents are relocated due to their jobs or whatever the situation may be,” he adds.

The GDE’s online system was launched in April and most schools experienced a few hick-ups but the problems were solved and the process is running smoothly.

Japie says they have experienced a lot of problems and feel the online system doesn’t work for their school.

The online system provides the department with a centralised database, which will be used for future planning purposes.
