K9 Unit sniffs out driver who tried to avoid road block

A 38-year-old man was arrested by members of the SAPS K9 Unit for possession of an unlicensed firearm after he tried to avoid a police road block.

The incident took place last Sunday on the R555 at the Etwatwa/Springs off-ramp.

According to Spring police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora, the man stopped his car after noticing a road block being conducted by the SAPS, got out of the vehicle and ran away.

The K9 Unit gave chase and caught the man, finding a 9mm pistol, nine live rounds of ammunition, a holster and pepper spray in his possession.

Ramphora says the man claims he was on his way to Maputo in Mozambique.

He will appear in the Springs Regional Court on August 24.
