Workers ask for money to remove extra black bags

A resident of Wright Park resorted to paying a bribe to refuse removal workers to have her rubbish in black bags taken away.

The resident, who does not want to be named for fear of victimisation, says she had a few extra black bags that would not fit into the wheelie bin due to her refuse not being removed as per schedule.

She waited for the refuse removal trucks and asked the workers if they could take the few extra bags.

“They told me I must pay them for taking the bags,” she says.

She explains they asked her for R20 to remove the extra bags.

“I was desperate to have them removed as I do not have the means to remove them myself,” she says.

She adds she cannot afford an extra bin.

“I don’t always have extra bags but when I do, what am I supposed to do with them if they refuse to take them away without being paid extra?” she asks.

“We already pay so much more for the bins and there are many people who cannot afford extra bins.

“It’s not right that they are asking for even more money to take it away, even if it is just R20.”

The Addie has not yet received comment from Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
