Support Casual Day

Spring into Action is the theme of this year's Casual Day, which will be celebrated on September 4.

The campaign, which is one of South Africa’s most successful fund-raising projects for people with disabilities, is celebrating its 21st birthday this year.

Since its inception, Casual Day has raised a total of R222-million for people with disabilities.

This event is run in partnership with all the disability organisations in South Africa and raised R28-m last year.

Casual Day spokesman Andrea Vinassa says the idea was ‘borrowed’ from the American concept of Casual Day.

It developed into a fund-raiser for people with disabilities by the officials of the National Council for People with Disabilities in SA, in Edenvale.

The idea behind this day is to provide the country with the opportunity to show their solidarity with persons with disabilities, at the same time enjoying team building and camaraderie with their fellow participants.

She says it gives South Africans the opportunity to be creative and have fun while contributing to the betterment of society.

It is community spirit in action. Each year there is a different theme which inspires people to dress up.

Stickers are sold for R10 each 500 NGOs working in the disability sector all over the country.

The proceeds are then distributed to 12 national beneficiaries all over the country.

Andrea says anyone can become disabled at any time and will then have to learn how to cope with their disability, and this makes it important to support this worthy cause.

Andrea urges the community to buy their stickers at Edgars, Absa and Shoprite stores.
