Instagramer explores Springs

With technology playing such a vital role in people’s daily lives, social media has become the norm.

Instagram is a well-known social media site where pictures of anything can be posted.

Rapailane Rasegoete (24) from KwaThema has a passion for architecture and buildings, and has become fascinated with the buildings around Springs.

He did a lot of research and found that Springs reportedly has the second biggest collection of small scale art deco buildings in the world, following Miami.

There are 34 art deco buildings in Springs.

The art deco style was built in mostly American cities between 1925 to 1940.

According to www.wentworthstudio.com, buildings were richly embellished with hard-edged, low-relief designs and geometric shapes with stylised floral and sunrise patterns.

Rapailane has been posting pictures of these buildings on his Instagram account for a year and people started showing a lot of interest.

This encouraged him to organise an Instawalk – where a group of people get together to explore a place, while documenting their experience with photos.

Rapailane gathered a group of people on Sunday morning at 9.30am. They met at The Avenues parking lot and made their way through Springs CBD from Second Street, to the fire station, to First Avenue and back to the starting point.

Rapailane explained many interesting facts about the buildings and how they are classified as art deco buildings.
