Chance seeks help

Chance Children's Home is situated in Dunnottar and caters for 90 orphaned children.

The name originates from Children’s Home and Nurturing Centre and is currently the only children’s home in the area.

The home was established in 1996 by Danny and Trudy Howell and they provide shelter, food and protection for children up to 18 years of age.

They also look after newborns.

Magda Reed, the home’s fundraiser, says their focus is on improving the life of children who have been sexually abused and battered.

The home also offers protection for children who are HIV positive or who have AIDS and are in the terminal stage of the illness.

All the children are under constant supervision by a dedicated team which includes full time staff members, a qualified sister, auxiliary nurses, social workers and a qualified therapist.

Each hostel has its own ablution facilities as well as a TV to provide entertainment for the children.

Recently one of the hostels had to be closed as the wooden floors collapsed and they had to make room for these children at the other hostels on the premises.

Reed says this hostel needs serious renovations.

“As we all know, the children of today must sustain our society in the future and without love, education and support this would not be possible,” she says.

Therefore, staff members from Chance are appealing to the public and businesses to support the facility and help provide the children with a better chance in life.

“Any donation, may it be in the form of food, clothes, toys, bedding and food will be accepted with gratitude,” says Reed.
