UPDATE: Vehicles turn to ashes in Pam Brink Stadium

Vehicles parked on rugby field enveloped in flames at Pam Brink stadium.

A fire at the Pam Brink Stadium in Geduld caused a buzz among residents on Tuesday (August 4).

Smoke rose from the centre of the stadium and fire trucks were on the scene.

Gert Parsons from Afriforum was at the scene and says various vehicles, including buses, were completely destroyed.

The vehicles were parked on the rugby field at the stadium.

“These are redundant vehicles owned by the council and they have stood here for some time,” he says.

He says the grass on the field was long, and alleges the blaze spread from a veld fire.

“When I arrived at the scene, there were fire trucks and some of the buses were already completely burned,” says Parsons.

He feels the fire was a result of negligence and that someone should be held accountable.

Pieter Rudolph, spokesman for the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, says the cause of the fire is still unknown as investigations are to be finalised.

“Grass was burned, as well as some of the redundant written-off vehicles on the property which belong to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality,” he says.

He states the vehicles were stored on the property for auctioning purposes.

Rudolph confirms the fire started at about 11.20am and that four buses and one truck were damaged.

“The fire was extinguished with water by utilising three fire pumps and one water tanker,” Rudolph concludes.
