It’s no picnic at this park

Olympia Park in Geduld has become an eyesore to residents as illegal dumping persists.

Leon van Rhyn, a resident in the area, says he cannot stand the sight of the rubbish in such a beautiful park.

“One of the main reasons I bought my house in 2000 was because of the beautiful park across from it, if I had known it would become a site for dumping, I may not have bought the house,” he says.

Since early last year, van Rhyn has attempted to contact many people regarding the dumping, but says the problem continues.

“This is a park, not a dumping site,” he states, “filthy nappies, glass bottles and many other things get dumped here and it looks disgusting.”

He adds the refuse is also almost never collected on time and speculates that this may be contributing to the dumping.

“When the municipality eventually comes to clean the place up two or three days later, it just looks the same again and then it’s more hassles to get them there again,” he says.

Van Rhyn has cleaned the park about six times at his own cost as he is fed up with the park looking like a dump.

“I cannot continue to clean the park at my own cost, and why should I?” he asks.

“As taxpayers, we are paying a monthly fee for refuse removal, litter picking and illegal dumping removal.

“Where is our money going if we have to do these things ourselves?

“All we ask from the municipality is that our refuse be removed once a week on one specific day as this is going to become a health risk in our area.”
