Dog show at SPCA fun run

A business in Fifth Avenue hosted a fun run fundraiser for the Springs SPCA on Saturday, August 1.

EMPD officer MJ Meyer demonstrates how the K9 dogs attack as he pretends to be the 'suspect' who steals drugs and runs away with a firearm.

Walkers and runners joined in at the starting point on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Ninth Street in the Springs CBD and made their way to sport fields of Hoërskool Dr Johan Jurgens High School.

Esmé Calitz baked a large cake and put the delicious treat up for a raffle with all the proceeds going to the SPCA.

Spectators and supporters kept warm by browsing through several stalls before the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s K9 unit entertained the crowd with a dog show.

Four EMPD officers, Dawie van der Merwe, Attie Fourie, Willem van Zyl and MJ Meyer explained to the crowd the roles of each of their dogs and the intelligent dogs showed the crowd how easy they can sniff out drugs, explosives and firearms.
