Caved in ceiling at FERH fixed

A section of ceiling caved in at the Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) on Monday, July 13.

Annemarie Grobbelaar (33) said it was an unexpected experience and that they all received the shock of their lives.

“I mean, this is the last place you would expect something like this to happen,” she said.

Grobbelaar and her mother, Elizabeth Bezuidenhout (63), were at the hospital on the day so that her mother, who suffers from cancer, could see a doctor.

“We were speaking with a nurse and suddenly, just a few feet away from us, a part of the ceiling caved in.”

She jokingly said it felt like they were in a war zone.

Grobbelaar explained how they were all shocked and when a small cat jumped from the fallen ceiling, they were even more surprised.

“If the weight of a small cat can make a ceiling cave in, that’s something to worry about, but luckily no one was injured.”

Hendrik Buda, spokesman for FERH, confirmed that the ceiling caved in.

“No patients or staff were injured, nor were they in the parameter of where the ceiling fell,” he said.

According to Buda the ceiling has since been repaired.
