Help clean our town

Hennie Bezuidenhout (48), a Springs resident and avid businessman, has challenged businesses in Springs to cleanup the town, piece by piece.

Bezuidenhout says that he and a team of concerned citizens have been cleaning up the Springs CBD for six months and want to dare other businesses to join their cleaning initiative.

“What we need is more hands to remove the posters.”

“If every business in Springs only cleans up the area in front of their premises, remove the posters and clear away the papers, it will make a major difference to how people see Springs,” he says.

Bezuidenhout says that they have developed an excellent mixture that softens posters and enables volunteers to easily remove ad posters from walls, lampposts and electrical boxes.

All you need is:

  • Five litre water
  • 250ml ammonia
  • Laundry detergent

The Springs parks department is also part of this community initiative and contributes to the cleanup by removing the black refuse bags when they pass.

“Springs used to be known as the ‘Jewel of the East Rand’ and won multiple awards for being the cleanest town,” Bezuidenhout says. “We are not satisfied with how our town is looking, so now we are doing something about it.”

The group was delighted to hear that large businesses and banks in the CBD had decided to participate and contribute to the cleanup.

“We also brought in homeless people to help cleanup and they are earning a little something for their help.”

Bezuidenhout adds that the group expects that the persons who paste the posters will return and re-paste them.

“But my logic tells me that if we continue to remove the posters, on a regular basis, it will become too expensive for them to keep putting the posters up.”

The group challenges businesses, community members, schools and persons of all cultures and religions to join in and help make Springs a town that everyone can be proud of.

“Residents can’t keep complaining and still do nothing about it, let’s all get in the game and help out.”
